FOR SALE: Pair of African Grey Parrots. Male is “Sid”. Female is “Nancy’”. Large Cage and Breeding box. Opening for access to breeding box can be closed.
Dr. Jeanne Smith, Veterinarian, showed us that Nancy has a dark tattoo under her left wing web which indicates a female.
A gender certificate from blood test for Sid will be provided.
Prior owners said Sid & Nancy are teenagers and they were trying to breed them.... (read more) The foster mom thinks they are young as they don’t sleep all day.
It appears there was very little interaction with humans which is why they have been picking their feathers.
Both birds had all feathers and long nails when they came to us early 12-2024.
Their wings and nails were clipped and nails filed late 12-2024.
Sid & Nancy received “good health” after a physical exam by Dr. J. Smith, Avian Health Services in 12-2024. visit our website
Dr. Smith said the birds have received good nutrition. Dr. Smith recommends switching the birds from mostly a seed diet to a pellet diet with fresh fruits and vegetables. Sid & Nancy are avoiding the pellets. Dr. Smith provided info on how to switch their diet.
Nancy is tame. She steps up and likes to be petted. She gives kisses.
Sid is becoming tame slowly. He will step up on a hand if out of the cage. He is scared. Children should not be near Sid until he is more tame. Sid will not get up on a stick and the stick scares him.
Sid lets his beak be petted. He is letting his head be petted sometimes. Despite having his wings clipped a few weeks ago, Sid occasionally flys off the cage to chew up cardboard boxes. When the foster mom enters the room, he knows he’s not supposed to be there and flys back to the cage. Lol.
Dr. Smith said both birds have been chronic feather pickers due to behavioral issues. Dr. said they may do better in a different home and they already are doing better.
Sid & Nancy have new feather growth. Dr. Smith said they may have areas with few feathers once they have molted.
Sid & Nancy seem to be happy and have stopped feather picking since about Christmas when they moved to a foster home.
Sid & Nancy occasionally make tone sounds, but do not talk. The tone sounds are similar to a tone when a microwave is done. Sid makes the same bird sound each time the foster mom leaves his room, like he’s saying goodbye. They are quiet at night.
Sid & Nancy need a good home with lots of interaction with their pet parents. The internet says African Grey Parrots:
a. Mate for life and monogamous breeders
b. Are Prized for ability to mimic human speech and noises, which makes it one of the most popular avian pets.
c. They are highly intelligent birds, needing extensive behavioral and social enrichment as well as extensive attention in captivity or else they may become distressed.
d. Feather plucking is a common symptom seen among such distressed grey parrots, affecting up to 40% of captive individuals. Social isolation hastens stress.
Hand fed young African Grey Parrots are selling for around $4,000 each without a cage in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas from reputable sellers.
